Something to complain about!

It's funny how things work, yesterday I could not see a need to complain about anything and today I woke up with a very sore throat and aching body.

But at least I have this home grown chamomile tea steeping, with lemon and honey from a local farm to ease my aches and pains...

and the warmth of the suns rays to sooth my soul.

Still not much to complain about really!

A beautiful life!

Right now I am finding it hard to complain about anything... nice way to be don't you think?

To be honest the complaints I do have are so minuscule in the grand scheme of things, like;

"I wish those dreaded mosquitoes would stop waking me up at 1 am, buzzing in my ear and biting my face!"

Lately I have been reminded constantly of how fortunate I am (we are) to live in a country where beauty surrounds us, as well as endless opportunities. If things are not quite heading in the direction we want we have the option to steer things back towards our desired end goal!

How can we not live a life that we love?

If we are not, then I believe we are not opening our eyes to the endless possibilities available to us under this big blue sky of ours or embracing the beauty that makes up our life!

It is up to us!

My creative space: a hive of activity!

As parents devoted to raising our children to be the best that they can be, care for themselves and their environment as well as have a willingness to learn and try new things we think it's important to do our best to challenge ourselves and develop new skills. As there is more to who we are than simply being parents, so we believe we should nurture our own personal growth and development as well.

The way in which I do this is through creating... I feel so inspired to create and have a great desire to explore, learn and experiment. When I explore and learn new techniques I share them with my children... and then together we create!

By pushing myself further out of my comfort zone I've opened up my horizons as well as exposed my children to things that they may never have experienced otherwise, like visiting a leather tannery and seeing the workings of the factory floor.

Aside from providing me with more fulfilment my children seem to also feel a sense of pride. I over heard my eldest boy say to a friend the other night;
"My mum made my guitar case, isn't it cool!"

And over the past week my little munchkin has helped me make all these!

He has preferred to help me stamp the letters and punch holes into cuffs than play with his lego. Which is saying something... he loves his lego!

Repurposed: Old Blanket come Guitar Case

I've been finding it hard to go past old blankets lately I've seen a lot in many op shops for several years and have bought a few for our home.

This one was in an op shop I frequent regularly for sometime before I finally had an idea that gave me the excuse to purchase and repurpose it. A few small holes can be overlooked in a woollen blanket when what you really want it for is to make a guitar case.

With a pocket at the front...

and a personalised label hand stamped with my new set of leather tools... my eldest boy is absolutely chuffed about his new guitar case and can't wait to take it to his guitar lesson this afternoon.

He has no idea what 'Fosseys' is but I just loved the classic retro label, so I left it in it's original position and cut the pattern around it.

So just for something different I thought I'd bring a few mediums together to make a thank you card for recipients who would appreciate the work that went into creating it.

Repurposed

Last winter we found our coats and scarves needed to be easily accessible... at first they were stacked on an ottoman, then flung over the arm of a chair and eventually hung on the guest towel rack in the bathroom which did not suffice when guests stayed for a weekend. Then over summer it was straw hats that need to be in reach.

Several weeks ago we rescued this piece of timber and all it's rustic charm from a stack destined for a bonfire and have since been on the look out for the right hooks to suit.

Over the weekend we found these cast iron hooks and a few hours later we had the perfect solution to our problem hanging right behind the front door!

Taking the old & discarded, transforming them into statement pieces is a favourite pastime of mine!

Hoping you too have found joy in rescuing and repurposing something destined for the rubbish heap.

Bohemian?

I have been referred to as bohemian many times through out my life and I can see why in a lot of respects.

Dictionary meaning: a person who has informal and unconventional social habits, esp. an artist or writer.

We're a bohemian family in fact... and I was reminded of this numerous times over the past 6 weeks (during school holidays) while exploring our new region, revisiting our previous, socialising with new & old friends and acquaintances. Walking through shopping centres, feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff and unnecessary consumption, especially since we're long time second hand shoppers and have filled most of our home and even wardrobes with second hand goods.

Our tree change twelve months ago has brought about a whole new way of living, one that sits well with our core values, it's easier to be our unconventional selves out here! But exposure to how a lot people live stirs up so many questions of how, why, what's the purpose of what so many fill their time with, home with, minds with? Seeing what people throw out has always astounded me, where is the value in what you have if it is so easily disposed of... living consciously is not necessarily easy but it is very fulfilling.

It is our desire to live a beautiful life, encouraging our children to respect their environment (people included) by understanding the impact of their choices on the environment as well as other people, value what they obtain and work towards obtaining it rather than expecting it just fall into their laps.

I've just reopened my Esty store and am selling new items, items for a reason not just a season! Handmade with love and passion by me, using ethically made materials sourced locally as much as possible as well as repurposing the old & discarded turning them into statement pieces. Our tree change has also brought a logistical challenge in transporting furniture so for now I am holding back on repurposing furniture to sell and will instead only produce items for use in our home.

I hope my range influences a small number of people to change the way live, and have that spread. It's okay to be socially unconventional, especially when it's in a positive way... having less and not turning over your items each season, spending your hard earned dollars on people who put the love and passion into producing their goods rather out sourcing production offshore at minimal cost in order to produce en masse and maximise profits. As well as shopping second hand, I purchase handmade new items as much as possible.

It is possible to live consciously and live a beautiful life, wear stylish clothes, eat exceptionally well and enjoy the company of interesting people!

Plaiting

Through out the school holiday period, between making presents, socialising, fulfilling work commitments, playing with our children, exploring our new region, gardening, cooking, taking a short weekend away and partaking in all the other necessities of life... I found myself plaiting and experimenting with leather.

This is a two strand plait I learned, made using kangaroo leather. I loved it so much I made a wristband for myself, my hubby...

& then a collar...

for our new little 'Boho'.

It all started with a coated cotton friendship band...

then I challenged myself by plaiting strands of unravelled linen twine (this was not easy) but persisted and made wristbands for each member of my family.

This one features a button that my little munchkin chose for his.

From there I went to leather lacing and...

then fabric scraps, which by the way, makes a great sweat band while gardening.

This is just the beginning of my experimenting... after being directed to a leather supplier and tannery by a saddler, then exposed to the possibilities of what I could do with leather I am hooked!

Looking forward to sharing more leather projects with you over the coming year... and some other non leather projects too.

Back to normality...

6 weeks of school holidays changes the norm in so many ways. There is a lot more spontaneity, many more late starts to the day, long days, late nights and road trips.

Here are a few things that we'd like to maintain in as we head back into 'normality'.

Riding up to the farm garden in the late afternoon...

to harvest some goodies for dinner...

check on the progress of vegies that require more space than our vegie patch can provide...

like zucchini's...

get the boys ready for bed, cuddle their most recent pet...

Boho!

And while the boys drift off into lala land, retreat to the verandah to sit and chat by candle light under the start lit sky....

before heading into the studio to work on new projects, catch up on reading or thinking!

Although I look forward to regaining some sort of normality, there are many aspects of the school holiday period I will miss.

Hitting the ground running!

To kick start the year I had the first for the year Living Magazine contribution due today!

Talk about hit the ground running... I left this project for the start of the new years, but have not stopped thinking about it throughout the festive period. Having only been back to work for three days has meant it was a marathon effort completing the task.

Finalising the designs lingering in the back of my mind.

Putting the pieces together and photographing the steps.

Styling & capturing the final piece shot.

Writing the steps then editing, editing, editing... both words and images.

Time to take a deep breath and send it!

WOW! What a way to kick start the working year. It's been fun! An adrenaline rush in fact.

I look forward to sharing the result with you once the magazine hits the stands.

Now as the holiday period ends and another year of work begins, with the rest of the family still home, I think I need to read my own article on working from home which I wrote at the end of last year for the ARTshine blog.

Even though I have the desire get started on so many new and exciting projects getting back into work mode is a little challenging, especially when the last couple of weeks has been about:

taking time out to spend with my beautiful family

mornings spent tending to our gardens & pets

long lunches or lazy afternoons spent with friends

afternoons splashing in the water

evenings spent walking around our beautiful surroundings

and nights spent sipping fine wine while starring up at the stars!

Through out these past two week there have been so many treasured moments made that deserve to be held onto for many years to come.... as well as unexpected sad times, but I look at sad times as an opportunity to remind ourselves of how much we should embrace the good times and appreciate the beauty of our life.

Nature puts on a spectacular display!

Yesterday it rained.. it poured and poured, all day.

Then suddenly it stopped!

So we ventured outside to see the result.

There was so much water.

It was a spectacular sight.

There was this peaceful feeling across the farm.

Despite the torrent (slight exaggeration) running under the bridge

Then there was the sunset...

And the mist hovering over the dam...

as well as over the paddocks where sheep grazed in silence.

It was nothing short of magical...

as the light quickly faded away.

My creative space: gift bags for boys

This weekend both my boys each have a birthday party to go to and so today I made gift bags with more of a boy feel to them...

then the one I made for my recent Living Magazine DIY Design contribution.

While I made the bags they made the adorable cards!

There's been lots of gift making taking place this week, both in the kitchen and the studio, with Christmas just around the corner there is still so more to make though!!!

On the road to living a more sustainable existence!

Despite the busyness of this time of year I've found much joy in the process of living a slower more sustainable life.

Making strawberry conserve for loved ones and treasured friends.

Then embellishing the jars in a way that will hopefully make the recipients feel as special as we think they are!

Observing the flourishing beauty in our garden like these delicate little chamomile flowers...

harvesting each one by hand...

then air drying them and storing them for a time when a soothing cup of chamomile tea is needed.

Stopping to take in the gentle breeze blowing over the long grass glowing in the morning sun.

Tutorial: Fabric Flower Feature

In addition to my DIY Design piece for the Dec/Jan 2011 issue of Living Magazine I’ve put together this little tutorial on making a simple yet effective fabric flower feature as seen on the little singlet that the gift bag was made for.

To give you some background, here is an exert of the introduction I wrote for the magazine piece:

Gift giving to me is more about the thought & effort than price & brand, which is why I like to make the gifts we give whenever possible (and if not I buy something handmade or ethically made). The gift aside though, I also like to make a reusable gift bag using scrap fabric... not much goes to waste in our home. Be it fabric left over from something Iʼve made or something Iʼve repurposed. In this case itʼs the remnants of a dress I wore throughout one of my pregnancies that became way too big after bubs arrived, so I cut the top off and made a skirt out the bottom. The contrasting fabric was left over fabric from something I made years ago. Both of these remnants have been kept in my remnant stash trunk for projects just like this one.

Steps:

Cut fabric to desired length and width for your flower. As I did not have enough fabric to cut just one piece I’ve cut two pieces and joined them together to create a piece sized 9x44cms for a flower to go on a baby’s singlet sized ’00’.

Join the ends (the shorter sides) to create a circle by sewing a small seam.

Turn inside out and iron open the seam/s.

Fold in half with the wrong side and seems on the inside. Then stitch a loose straight stitch along the raw edge without back stitching.

To shape your flower pull one of thread ends and gather the piece. When I am happy with the shape I like to tie a knot with both ends of the thread just to stop the gather from loosening.

Pin your flower in place on the garment.

Using a long and close zigzag stitch sew the centre of the flower to your garment fixing your flower in place while creating a feature out of the stitching.

To strengthen the area of the garment that the flower is attached to, cut a small circle out of both a scrap piece of fabric and a double sided adhesive film (used for appliqué).

Iron the adhesive film to the back on the circle and then peel the paper layer off and iron to the back of the garment. I like to place baking paper on my ironing board when working with such an adhesive. You may even like to place baking paper over the garment itself to save getting adhesive on your iron.

Sew a zigzag stitch once again, this time in the centre of the circle.

Then to finish off your piece, sew on a feature button in the centre of the flower.

Now your singlet is ready to be placed in your gift bag and given to the lucky recipient of your handy work.

Portia, my shadow!

Where do 24 hours go? They seem to just disappear in a flash these days... try as I might to savour each day for what it has to offer, time still seems to just slip away faster and faster.

This is Portia (named after 'Portia' in The Merchant of Venice) is our second eldest child. She turned 11 a couple of months ago and like Tess provides much joy to my simple life.

She follows me where ever I go... and forgives me every time I trip over her.

She snuggles up for cuddles whenever she can, even while I am driving.

On the weekend we bought ducklings and she became rather jealous when I sat in the sun with them cradled in my arms.

It's hard to imagine life without my furry & fluffy friends, they are companions who add to the atmosphere of my everyday.... and a great source of entertainment.

This beautiful girl is our eldest child 'Tess' (named after Tess of the d'Urbervilles).

Next year she will be 15!!!

She always manages to squeeze herself into the smallest spaces.

And in the most beautiful places like this, amongst the the flowers in a warm and sunny spot in our back room.

She adds to the atmosphere of my everyday in so many more ways than she will ever know!

You're a precious girl Tess. xx

Behind the scenes...

I am often asked if my studio is ever messy, as when guests drop by it is more often than not in order.

Today I've been shooting new product shots. as I will be reopening my online store soon with new items like overlay's, totes and my repurposed furniture. by marie-nicole products represent a lifestyle which is why my range extends over many aspects of life. I wanted to shoot out in the paddock today but the weather is miserable so I opted to using my studio instead.

While shooting I was suddenly struck by how messy my studio became, when I want to get 'that shot' I go into a trance almost, grabbing things here and there rearranging them to create makeshift stands to prop up my reflector & hold products...

...as well as push the things out the door to make way for more shifting and rearranging.

Messy enough for you?

Classic Yass Weekend - part 3

My Open Studio was the way we ended the Classic Yass weekend.

It started out as a gorgeous bright sunny day with the slight breeze blowing and the promise of another stunning day in the Yass/Murrumbateman area.

Out on the verandah I set up a little display of my latest work.

And inside my studio I displayed samples of previous works...

pulled out and dusted off some award prints...

as well as my concept coffee table book and a portfolio of hand cut stencils for guests to browse through.

I wanted to portray the journey I have been on to date as an artist & designer as well as the lifestyle that we as a family lead. And with catering any guests with great food, wine and an enjoyable atmosphere being central to how we live I wanted to give our open studio guests a taste of this too.

Serving T2's Strawberries & Cream fruit tea served chilled, with fresh strawberries & blueberries ...

a selection of sheeps and cows cheeses purchased from Thyme to Taste at our local farmer's market...

the choice of Eden Road Wines (one of local wineries) PINOT GRIS or RHE (Viongier)

We had a steady flow of guests through out the entire day and a very nice surprise with Stuart & Vinh (my business coach) from Quantum Compass & ArtSHINE driving down from Sydney baring gifts for both us and our boys.

It was lovely to see friends and familiar faces who came, as well meet all the new people who came out to chat about what I do, how I do it and share their own creative experiences and interests.

Holding this 'open to the public' open studio was a very interesting experience, one that I am really glad I had... it has triggered a lot of thoughts in my mind as to the possibilities for the future.

Rejuvenating in the garden...

...and the kitchen!

Looking back over the last 6 weeks and what took place in the, then looking at my wishful list of things I would have liked to achieved, it's easy to see why I did not meet all my expectations.

As my time was taken up with:

Hosting a fantastic long weekend with friends for the Murrumbateman Moving Feast.
School holidays.
Baking & decorating 200 cupcakes for the Murrumbateman Field Day's.
Working in the preschool's cafe and promoting the Arts Trail & Classic Yass over the two days of the field days.
Making, writing and photographing my next DIY Design contribution to Living Magazine.
Writing an article for the ARTshine forum.
Attending a preschool committee meeting.
Modelling [laughing hysterically here] at a Melbourne Cup Fundraiser Luncheon Fashion Parade - for a very worthy cause.
Designing a new website.
Preparing for and holding my Open Studio for the Classic Yass Arts Trail.
Attending an evening concert at my big boys school.
Participating in as many activities as we could do during the Classic Yass weekend.
Transporting my family around to various locations for work, school and sporting activities... we're a one car family.
In amongst all that there was coffee, wine and laughs shared with friends... gardening, cooking and riding bikes with my boys, the usual day to day activities of life and a few other bonus memory making experiences.

And then I wonder why I did not achieve EVERYTHING I wished to. What more could we have fitted into the last 6 weeks?

As this last weekend drew near, hubby (who also has a list just as long of things he's been involved with relating to voluntary and paid work) and I felt ourselves getting closer to that imaginary line that tells you're about to cross the boundary of what you are physically and mentally capable of doing. So we avoided committing to anything this weekend other than spending time together at home just the four of us, tend to our garden and cook up a storm.

We tried to rescue our large patch of cornflower which was blown over in a storm earlier in the week and cut some to enjoy inside, unfortunately we're not hopeful about our rescue attempt on the patch.

The variety of roses scattered through out the garden is so picturesque that I decided to take only a stem or two from each variety and display them together.

As well as selection of the other varieties that adorn our garden at present...

daisy, californian poppy, dwarf snap dragon, cornflower and dwarf stock.

And then there are the flowering herbs...
sage, chives and thyme.

After tending to the garden it was time to cook. This was my first time making bread from scratch. This delicious 'Chickpea Moroccan Flat Bread' recipe is one of Jamie Olivier's... and is so yummy that all the boys that live on the farm who were playing outside our yard as it came out the oven delighted in tasting it and kept asking for more.

I also made my first wholegrain mustard using a recipe from the book 'Gift's from the Kitchen' by Annie Rigg (a house warming gift from very dear friends).

While I baked bread and made mustard hubby cooked along side of me, making this delectable citrus syrup cake with lemon, lime and orange. I can't tell the recipe he used, but I do know it was the first time he'd made this particular recipe.... and it was divine!

So that is what we do to recover from a crazy month and half.

Classic Yass weekend - part 2

For the Classic Yass weekend our regular farmers market was held on the riverbank.

It was a gorgeous day to have the markets there and if weather like this could be guaranteed every market day it would a lovely spot to hold it regularly.

We like to shop local as much as possible, especially since it is so nice to get to know the local producers and business owners. Like Julian and Dennis from Dog Trap Vineyard who sell at markets in the area and from their website. They are always up for a lovely chat and a laugh which makes shopping so much more enjoyable.

They make an exceptional range of red wines, with touching stories behind some.

Julian also made a selection of reusable bags to take your purchases home in... isn't that fantastic!

These spectacular native flowers (Red Devils, I think they're called) are flowers that I have bought at the markets many times... they are very hardy and last such a long time as a cut flower.

Kate (& Jeremy) from Goldenholm Farm always greet us with a smile and a chat...

while we try to decide which cut of biodynamic beef we'll buy.

run by Andrew (& Lee-Ann not pictured) often accompanied by with their delightful daughters...

and these adorable little wooden cows.

There are many more stalls worth visiting like the vegetable stand, the wool stand, the honey stand, the CWA members selling their home made jams, the Apple Orchid, the Olive Grove and the Cherry Growers... etc. It's a small market in comparison to big city farmer's markets but the lovely thing about our local market is that it's supporting our community and gives us a sense of belonging.

Now not at the farmers market but in town (49 Comur St, Yass) and a regular stop for us on our grocery shopping trips is our local butcher Patrick's Butchery... where you'll always be guaranteed a welcoming smile and a chat by either Keith or Terry (or one of their staff). While enjoying their beautifully displayed great quality meat and award winning sausages.

Class Yass & Arts Trail - part 1

What an amazing weekend!

This town sure knows how to put on fun filled event.

Classic Yass weekend had so much happening, so I'm going to split this post into three parts, starting with some of what we did on the Saturday.

There were old tractors and machinery on display.

This Olds Engine is one of two known to be in working condition remaining in the world, the other is in the USA. Our big boy was fascinated by it and asked lots of questions.

The gentlemen working it took great joy in sharing as much of his knowledge about it and what it was originally purchased and used for right here in Yass.

I snuck off and had a little fun taking a reflection shot of myself in this uniquely shaped window.

Our boys simply must stop and say hello to each and every dog they see or it would not be a usual family day out.

A bit of fun was had participating in a slot car race.

Here is a not so happy munchkin who really wanted a turn too :-(

There was this gorgeous handmade patch work tee pee.

And classic cars all through Banjo Patterson Park in the middle of town.

Then ofcourse there was the billy cart races, which Thomas the Tank Engine participated in.

Along with some entertaining billy carts.

Super fast billy carts.

And quirky billy carts like this pink high heel shoe.

After the races we visited a few open studios and art exhibitions. This one was held in the beautiful home of mixed media artist Lisa Fuller (and member of YassARTS) who runs art classes...

in a delightful studio space set up in the entry way of her home.

My friend (and newbie blogger) Ning has been taking her classes, here she is with her gorgeous blossoms.

There was so much more to see and do... and we did a lot more than I have shared with you here. A weekend like this just goes to show how special this town is, so much thought, energy, effort and creativity went into this weekend.

It was fabulous!

My creative space: preparing...

...for this Sunday's Open Studio!

Even if no one turns up this Sunday this whole exercise in my mind has been well and truly worth the effort. The number of new people I have got to meet along the way through preparing for this event (particularly other artists) has been fantastic.

The write up in the local paper last month has been a great conversation starter when meeting new people. Often the conversation starts with something like this; "You're an artist aren't you? I saw you in the paper." Which very refreshing after many months of simply being:

a newbie in town

T's Mum

O's Mum

B's Wife

etc...

So in between all the other happenings this week I have been trying to do my best to create an atmosphere and experience that will make the effort worth while for those who do venture out our way for my open studio.

They will be music playing inside and out,

along with a slide show running of my work.

I've built a temporary platform on the verandah to display some of my work

(these pallets will look covered on the day)

I'm preparing a small selection of brooches etc available for purchase

making up more business cards for future reference.

And since we're all about supporting local businesses,

I've ordered specialty cheeses from a local providore

and wine from a local winery

which will served in glasses accumulated from the Murrumbateman Moving Feast, a little plug gratis, simply because we had such a great time that weekend.

My neighbour who is also an artist and designer and new to the area will be setting up a little market and selling her jewellery.

There are still signs and balloons to hang up around the place to help people find us.

As well as flyers and maps to give out on the day about the Classic Yass weekend to encourage people to venture out and visit others on the trail.

Still a lot to do...

Guest Post & New Website

Today I did the guest post on the ArtSHINE blog: 'finding time... making time'.

Ironically this week has been one of those weeks where time just seemed to slip away on me.

Someone once said to me; "bite off more than you can chew and chew like crazy."

I much prefer to do things a little slower than that, when possible. More in line with the saying; "Take on big things like eating an elephant, one bite at a time". But every now and then I find myself committing to just a few too many things all at the same time.

In the midst of all the craziness I have been designing a new website and today I did a photo shoot to update my profile pic. Being a competent portrait photographer does not necessarily make a confident subject in front of the camera... so as I was doing the shoot I found myself going over in my head all the things I used to say to my clients to help them relax and be natural. Most of the time I would just talk to them about their interests and that would set off a sparkle in their eyes... not an easy thing to do when you're photographing yourself though!!!

I ended up just telling myself;

"This will have to do!"

I hope this week you have made time for creating happy memories...

and reaching your dreams!

Being asked if I'd open my studio for this years Arts Trail was a little daunting at first, as we only moved to the region earlier this year. But the weekend sounds like so much fun, with:

Living magazine

The Oct/Nov issue of 'Living' has hit the stands.. and the Living magazine now has a beautiful new website you can also now subscribe to the magazine.

The current issue has my DIY Design contribution on recovering a stool. This was the piece that I chased the fog in order to get the shot I was after. In addition to the steps for recovering of the stool in the magazine there is a tutorial here on creating the twine detailing feature at the base of the legs.

What a nice surprise to see that featured in this issue is Al & Sarah Phemister two local artists I had the pleasure of meeting meeting in their inspiring garden when they held the pop up market referred to in the article.

Al makes the most remarkable scrap metal sculptures which you can see here on his website... they were the first items in their gorgeous garden that caught my eye, then my attention was directed to the colourful and playful features of both their home and garden. Sarah's warmth and vibrancy is not only represented in her home but also in her art... see Sarah's YassARTS profile... her ethos bringing beauty into everyday activities is one that we share.

What a great way to take a break from the chaos of the everyday, immersing yourself for a moment in the pages of an inspiring magazine.

In the garden

After a very busy and fun filled couple of weeks over the school holidays it was nice to end it with some time in the garden.

Hubby and I built a compost bin using pallets, star posts, feed bags and a sheet of tin.

while our little munchkin entertained himself by jumping in a puddle...

...and our big boy flew his new kite.

We're all enjoying the beauty scattered throughout the garden...

... and the delicious salad greens and herbs that flavour our meals

Hubby's put a lot of work into preparing and enriching the soil in our vegetable patch, so we look forward to harvesting some vegetables soon too!

Mail shed...

...that's right we have a mail SHED at home not a mail BOX!

There is a certain amount of liberation felt in knowing you don't have to worry about checking the mailbox everyday, there's no fear of the fact that people will know we're away if our mail box is over flowing, as well as the fact that the bills don't necessarily bring a smile to our face, so it's nice not to have to torture ourselves with them daily!

Our mail comes three times a week and even then we often don't check it on the exact allocated days for mail delivery.

The excitement of checking the mail is shared by all in the family when we do decide to check it, not just because it's always nice to receive a card or letter we did not expect or a magazine we subscribe to has arrived, but also because to get our mail we have to visit the mail SHED and that is a novelty in itself.

Especially just before sunset on a clear day, when the light that filters through the door at the other end of what was once a small shearing shed...

revealing the intriguing contents on the inside, the old bits and bobs & bags of coal.

This little shelf tucked in the corner is where we discover what we've received.

On the way out we stop and take in the beauty of the sunset setting and the way it illuminates the character of the old corrugated external panelling.

Twine detail tutorial

In addition to the Oct/Nov 2011 Living Magazine DIY Design piece I’ve put together this tutorial on adding twine detailing to the legs of the stool.

Adding that little bit of the unexepected is something I like to add to give a piece of furniture it's own unique character.

STEPS:

Firstly, unscrew the legs from the seat of the stool and remove the metal casing at the base of the legs, this could be as simple as prying out the nail holding it in place then sliding off the capping.

Sand and paint or restrain the legs.

With your choice of feature twine, measure out how much you will need to wrap around the base of the leg by twisting the twine tight as you go and allow for an over lap at the beginning of the process, as well as at the end, to enable you to hide the loose ends. Then cut to the desired length. It’s a good idea to cut a little more than you’ve measured out, as you may find in the actual mounting process your twisting could be tighter.

Paint the entire area of the base of the leg where you wish your twine feature to go with a fast drying heavy duty adhesive like liquid nails.

Splay out one end of the twine and flatten down onto the adhesive. Paint more adhesive over the top of the twine you’ve splayed out and flattened it down.

Then start the process of wrapping your twine around the base of the leg, twisting to tighten as you go as well as pressing the twine down firmly onto the adhesive to secure it into place.

Once you reach the end splay out the loose ends of the twine and flatten down onto the very underside of the leg. Be sure to uncover the original hole in the centre of the foot to reuse that hole to secure new rubber stoppers.

Re-drill the hole in the centre of the base of the leg if need be.

Place a rubber stopper on the end and screw into place.

Voi la! Your twine feature is complete, now all you need do is let the glue set then screw the legs back onto the seat...

enjoy your handy work and the unique piece you created.

In our local paper

Living in this region has brought about many new and exciting experiences and opportunities. Last month when I joined YassARTS I did not expect to be asked to be involved in the Classic Yass Arts Trail but that is exactly what happened and so in the first weekend of November my studio (among others this area) will be open to the public. Leading up to this event they are profiling artists and last Friday I was the lucky artist to be featured on page two of our local newspaper.

Sometimes we just need to STOP...

...and loose ourselves!

It is so easy for all of us to get so caught up in the chaos of just doing what needs to be done that we forget to give ourselves a real break. Yesterday I headed into the city on my own and had a list of things that I needed to do that was so long my head was spinning and my heart was racing. By mid afternoon I decided to abandon the rest of my intended "to do's" and escaped to the National Gallery instead. We've been living just an hour from the National Gallery for 8 months now and this is the first time I have taken the time to go in. Crazy I know!

This image is from when we visited the MET in New York City a couple of years ago but it relates to well to how I spent two hours yesterday afternoon.

I floated through the gallery, took in every detail of the creations that surrounded me... especially those that captivated my attention and ignited my imagination.

I dreamt

I pondered

I escaped

Then the thoughts started flowing, so I just sat and wrote in my journal all that entered my mind.

It was wonderful!

If you have not done something like this yourself lately, I'd like to encourage you to. Go loose yourself wherever you choose to and enjoy the feeling of the weight of the world being lifted from your shoulders.

My creative space: in a window

This week I had the opportunity to play in the window space of 'LabelLoveBoutique' (LLB) the new local stockist I wrote about in my last post.

The brief was simply to use a piece of my furniture as the centre piece. Since my latest creation the 'Harmony Chair' is so vibrant and fresh I thought it would be perfect for a spring colour palette, so that was where I started.

Then I collected walnut and poplar tree branches covered in vibrant yellow lichen from the farm to use with LLB clothing and accessories.

So with the input of both Nicole (the shop owner) and that of a friend who stayed around to help, this was the end result.

Oh!... a little hidden surprise resides on the underside of this chair, as this is where I have written the concept behind the design.

Living a creative life means moments of sheer bliss... this experience was definitely one of those moments for me!

Not just because I always manage to pick up a fantastic item...

but also because shop owner Nicole makes everyone feel so very welcome. Particularly as a new comer to town, warm welcomes are invaluable.

My creative space: making time to...

...collect calendular petals.

We used to have a retired neighbour back on the coast who always had a spectacular display of flowers in her garden. When I asked her how she does it she told me she removed all the dead heads and that encouraged new growth. I remember thinking at the time; "I wish I had the time to dead head our plants!"

But like with most desired pursuits it is not that we don't have the time, we just choose to spend our time doing other things. So, now days I make time!

I like to water our garden by hand as it gets my blood pumping more than standing there with a hose, so while I wait for the watering can to fill up.

I take the opportunity to cut off the dead heads from the calendular.

I've been collecting the petals to one day use them as a natural dye stuff, which is why I bought this book last year... it has been my goal for some time now to be able to collect flowers and foliage to dye my linens and by dead heading my calendular it is flowering prolifically, providing a beautiful display

as well as providing me with many more petals to collect.

This week I've also been preparing stock & props for the display at new local stockist. For the display I hope to be able to use some of these, cut down in size.

By the end of the week I should be able to share the results of that with you and introduce the new stockist too!

Salvaged

I've been meaning to share this rescued goodness with you for a few days now, but life has suddenly gotten really really busy... even busier than it was before... who would have thought that could be possible. Our tree change has meant a big increase in our work load (income earning that is) as well as home life's work load. Slow living certainly isn't about taking it easy, it is more about doing more for yourself making more from scratch, growing your own food and caring for animals that are provide a source of food as well as being companions. So all the extra bits and pieces we are now doing for ourselves has meant every hour in the day is accounted for in ways that all come together to provide our family with a healthier self sufficient existence (as much as possible at this stage anyway). And we're loving it!

So back to the salvaged item I wanted to share with you today... last week I spent a day seeking out pieces of furniture I could recuse and revamp and at a salvage yard I spotted this adorable little wire basket, it was exactly what I've been keeping an eye for since we brought home our 'Clucker Clan'. An added bonus was when to the counter to pay for the piece of furniture I wanted buy and said; "Oh, and this too please." The attendant said; "You can have that for nothing!"

This simple little basket brings much joy to our daily activities collecting eggs from our very efficient layers. Although it looks near empty now it was full yesterday. After french toast for breakfast and giving some to our neighbours we only have a small number left in the basket right now but it won't take long to fill it again.

My creative space: Harmony Chair

At the moment I am working on this very uniquely shaped chair. Which I will paint turquoise and reupholster in a beautiful flax linen with an intricate eight part hand printed design in an olive/sludge green.

As I was removing the (what seemed like hundreds of) tacks in this piece I came across some flecks of turquoise fabric and noticed there were two different sized upholstery tacks used indicating this piece had been recovered a couple of times already. I've never seen so many tacks in a piece before all these in just the base of one chair!

Something about old pieces that I really enjoy is wondering what the story is behind the piece. When I was removing the fabric from this piece I discovered a little information on it's past. It's very difficult to see as the writing is very faint... inscribed on the inside of the frame was:

"Recovered, July 1962, JB????, Avalon Uphol(?)"

Which gives me some idea of it's age!

My creative space: will soon...

... look out over a garden full of prettiness and inspiration.

We spent the entire weekend working on the flowers beds, planting more seedlings to accompany what is already thriving.

And all week I have found myself peering out my studio window enjoying the little hints of what's to come... and also venturing out there first thing in the morning to check the seedlings survived the frost and pulling out the pesky little weeds that keep popping up.

Education comes in many forms...

My hubby & I are big believers in this.

And although we have always read to, and with, our boys from the day they were born our big boy has not progressed in his reading as much as he should by the standards set for his year level.

So last week we sat down and discussed what we should do next to help him out. I thought we should try something different... it will be very interesting to see if this helps him long term.

He is very much a results boy, if he wants something to happen he will do whatever it takes to get the results he is after and even though he has assisted us in the kitchen before, I thought we should get him to 'read' and follow a recipe rather than simply follow our instructions. There is nothing to loose really, if anything it will teach him to how to cook for himself (as well as grow his own food which he is already involved in here at home).

Using Stephanie Alexander's 'Kitchen Garden Cooking with Kids' recipe book we started the process with him choosing a recipe, checking our stock items (as well as what was available in the garden) and writing up the ingredients he needed on the shopping list.

By Sunday evening his enthusiasm was even stronger. There was no need to ask him a second time to get started he was the one asking us when he could begin.

He read his recipe, got out all the ingredients...

pricked his potatoes then put them in the oven to bake...

while he waited for them to cook he cut the spring onions (beautifully) with a big knife

grated the cheese...

and cut some freshly picked greens from the garden to make a side salad.

After discovering his potatoes were perfectly cooked...

he proceeded to fill then with the stuffing he'd made and persisted even though he found it a little more challenging than he expected it to be...

after putting them back into the oven to finish them off, he pulled them out...

and was rightfully proud of the end result!

Even just in this first cooking session with him reading a recipe we could see an improvement in his reading simply from his willingness to reach the end result he was after.

We're so proud of him and look forward to many more Sunday dinners made by our big boy... we've decided to make this a weekly event.

Education comes in many forms... and can be rewarding and enjoyable for all.

Chasing the fog...

For the final pics of the next piece which will be featured in my next DIY Design article in the Oct/Nov issue of Living Magazine I really wanted to photograph in the fog. Partly because I'm finding the fog so intriguing (fog this dense is so new to us) and also because I thought foggy conditions would capture the beauty of this piece, along with photographing by the waters edge.

So, these past few days chasing the fog became my challenge.

Day 1: Started with a thick morning fog, after dropping everyone else off at work, school & preschool driving through really dense fog I raced back to the farm to discover that the fog had pretty much lifted. But it was a child free work day so I took my stool down to the dam and photographed it on the water's edge anyway.

Day 2: Also started with a very dense fog, even thicker than the day before... too thick I thought, so I waited for it to lift a little before lugging everything (preschooler in tow) to the dam to try again.

As soon as I saw it lifting I quickly grabbed my camera bag, stool and called out to my munchkin to put his gumboots on... it was all rather frantic from this point on. We raced across the road, made it through the first gate and then fought off the bottle fed lambs surrounding us as we tried to get through the second gate. All the while we watched the fog lift before our eyes, by the time we made it to the waters edge the fog ONCE AGAIN had lifted...

Day 3: No fog!

NO SHOOTING TODAY!

Day 4: We woke up to an EXTREMELY DENSE fog... fortunately it was Sunday so I could just take off without children in tow... Ah bliss! Early morning silence and time to myself... a very rare occurance. And the fog did not disappear before my eyes this time, probably because I decided to venture out into the dense fog and work in it rather than wait for it to lift a little.

After getting the shot I was after... one which captures the detail of the hand printed design, texture of the fabric and line twine detailing on the feet...as well as the beauty of the foggy surrounds...

I decided to make the most of the 'me time' and really take in my surroundings so took some pics of these beautiful spider webs...

natural 'works of art'...

and these little birds..

that kept swooping down to the water to catch their breakfast.

What a delightful way to start the day.

Perhaps I should do this every Sunday!

My Creative Space: Last knitting project for the season

As the day's get longer and more spring like days come our way the desire to knit lessens... and the desire to embrace spring by throwing on a cotton dress increases.

The reality is though is the breeze is still quite crisp and the evenings are very fresh.

So the last of my knitting projects that I finished this week was this loose weave alpaca/merino yarn cowl. Long enough to drape over a cotton dress and...

when the need arises to wrap snuggly around my neck.

Time to get started on some spring inspired projects that have been hovering in the back of my mind.

Happy Winter Flowers

Before the season changes completely and these flowers disappear I'd like to share them with you.

This cluster of calendula with its vibrant happy orange flowers sit at the base of our chimney stacks at the front of our cottage.

Catching just a glimpse of these on the greyest, coldest winters day (which today has turned out to be) makes my heart sing!

We had the great pleasure of sharing a beautiful meal in the sun with Vinh & Stuart from Quantum Compass yesterday, regrettably I did not take a photo of them... or the gorgeous winters day!

With them they brought a lovely gift, this beautiful orchid. This morning as I started unwrapping to in preparation for finding it a new home I realised I have no idea how to care for an orchid. I need to do some research on this... and soon! Any suggestion or recommendations would welcomed by the way.

Vinh was my business & lifestyle coach in the establishment phase of my current business, he was an absolute asset for the development of my new venture. He still provides inspiration, encouragement and guidance to many through the Arts Shine program, working with artists, designers and crafters on turning their passion into their livelihood.

Aren't they just spectacular flowers!

A very big thank you to Vinh & Stuart for their generous gift and delightful company on such a gorgeous winter's day.

Meet the Clucker Clan!

Our weekend started out with the simple pleasure of welcoming our 'Clucker Clan' to their new home.

We were planning to name them all individually but they all look so very similar we might have to wait until we get to know them better.

Our big boy has such a lovely connection with animals and welcomed each one with a big warm hug.

Our little munchkin was not so sure about them at first...

then decide try to coax them into eating straw...

but the leader of the Clucker CLan was more interested in checking out their sleeping quarters...

every nook cranny!

Our poor little puppy watched from outside but really wanted to join in the action!

Eventually everyone except our big boy went inside to prepare for dinner... he sat out in chook yard until dinner was ready.

First thing the next morning both the boys were out there again checking the Clucker Clan had a good night's sleep and let them out of their pen.

When they came back inside the Cluckers decided to check out our quarters!

Later that afternoon we were delighted to discover one of the Cluckers had laid an egg...

and then we discovered another in the most obscure place...

on top of the hot water tank!

Finding three eggs on day one was very exciting!

My creative Space: hint of spring

In the midst of all the busyness of the last two weeks I managed to make myself a woollen knit top in the hope that I'd still be able to wear this winter.

I used this pattern (adapted a little) which I picked up from Vinnies a few weeks ago for all of $1. This is the first time I've bought a pattern secondhand... I'll certainly do it again!

I loved the raw edge of the fabric so wanted to make a feature of it.

I made the top one day and then the next it suddenly seemed like spring had hit.. 20 degrees plus!!!

Thankfully it has cooled down again and I have been able to enjoy my new woollen knit top.

Then this morning we woke up to grey skies, rain and some trees baring new spring growth.

It seems like spring like weather last week fooled some trees into thinking Spring is actually here!

Poor trees!

Spring may be near but I don't think it's certainly still cool enough to have the fire burning and adorn ourselves with our warm winter woolllies.

LOVE YOUR LIFE

While up on the coast this weekend we caught up with some treasured friends. One of whom gave me this gorgeous frame as a belated birthday gift (what a lovely surprise). This particular friend is on my wavelength in terms of creativity and she said something along the lines of; "I think that instead of a photo this frame should have something simple in it, like a quote or something."

I loved that idea!

So on the long drive home my brain kept ticking over many favourite sayings and simple quotes but nothing seemed to suit. And then suddenly this phrase came into my thoughts:

LOVE YOUR LIFE

or change how you live

Ever come across people that seem to just churn through the motions living like they have no choice but to live the life that has been dished up to them? Well, I believe, that if your life is not working for you then it is likely that you are not working on living the best life you can live.

The friend who gave me this frame has been an inspiration when it comes to making the most of life's opportunities and changing what's not working so it is a fitting phrase for both the frame and my friend's character.

This frame and quote now has pride of place on my desk.

After a beautiful long weekend spent with treasured friends, it is nice to come home and take a break from catching up on washing etc by sitting down in front of the fire with a nice cup of coffee, a piece of chilli chocolate and read...

Drawer lining tutorial

In addition to my ‘DIY Design’ piece for the Aug/Sept 2011 Living Magazine I’ve put together this tutorial on lining drawers.

As I mentioned in the magazine piece, I like to line my drawers with the pages of old books, taking the old and discarded and repurposing them into statement pieces extends to the inside of my furniture as well. You can use whatever your heart desires to line yours... fabric, specialty paper, wall paper... and apply this same process.

STEPS
If using a book, with a sharp craft knife or scalpel cut along the spine of the book in a smooth straight cut and carefully remove the pages.

Thoroughly vacuum the inside of the drawers.

Arrange the pages inside the drawer in a lay out you like.

Place the pages on a clean flat surface in the same layout as you had in the drawer.

Using a clear finish apply a coat to a small area only where you intend on commencing your lining process. Start with the pages that will be on the underside of your layout if they are going to overlap.

Starting at the top of your drawer walls smooth the page down onto the coat of finish, pressing firmly to minimise air bubbles.

Apply a coat of finish over the top of that page where the overlap will occur and repeat the the process with the overlapping page. Then apply a coat of finish to the top of the pages.

Work your way around the drawer walls then repeat the process on the base of the drawer.

Apply an over all top coat, using a small brush apply a coat to the top edge of the drawer walls to ensure the top edge of the pages adhere well.

Once the finish is touch dry apply a second coat all over and attach your chosen hardware. To ensure you do not destroy all your hard work when you screw in your hardware poke a hole through your pages with the point of your knife where your hardware holes are, from the inside back.

Leave your drawers to air in a well ventilated area for a few days to get rid of the smell of fumes before placing drawers back into your cabinet.

Place your drawers back in...

and enjoy that nice little surprise and the warm fuzzy feeling you get every time you open a drawer of your cabinet...

knowing your personal touch has added both character and interest to your new statement piece created by you!

Introducing... Alice x 3

'Alice x 3' is the feature piece of my inaugural 'DIY Design' section in the Aug/Sept 2011 edition of Living Magazine in stores this week. In this issue I take you through the steps taking an old and discarded piece of furniture and turning it into a statement piece.

The name of this piece 'Alice x 3' comes from the fact that each drawer is lined with the pages of a Little Gold Book of Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland...
three different versions in order of the publishing date.

Soon, on this site will be a tutorial section where you'll find the steps to lining a drawer in the same way that I line mine using the pages of a book.

This delightful 3 drawer cabinet with it's vibrant spring fresh feel will be available for purchase at

My Creative Space: swamped

This week has been a little out of control, a bit like the fireplace in my studio this morning, I have had to shift the logs around so many times to stop the smoke from pouring out into the room. When I finally got it directing upwards this what happened. If this were a video you' d see that the smoke is actually spiralling up the chimney.

In the last couple of days I have managed to fit a little 'one on one' time with my new camera as I mentioned in my last post 'paying homage to the old' there is a lot to learn... like this discovery I made while taking a pic of this fabric that's been sitting in my studio waiting to be turned into a new winter top, hopefully I'll find time to make it before Spring!

Anyhow, back to my discovery about my new camera... on my last one you could not rely on the LCD screen on the back as a colour guide, it took a lot of trial and error (plus many hours of post shoot colour correction) to work out what would actually translate to computer screen and then to paper in the printing process.

So when I took this pic and saw how insipid the colour was I started to investigate my options...

and discovered a new function that allows you to make colour adjustments right there on the camera. Now this colour is still not balanced but it is a heck of a lot closer to the actual colour of the fabric. I was so excited by this function I loaded the pic onto my computer as quickly as possible to compare the difference between what's on the back of the camera to what appears on screen... AND I WAS IMPRESSED!

It is amazing how far the technology has come, it can also be overwhelming how quickly it changes. I am going to enjoy finding out more about this new camera!

One of the things that I have been working on for the past few weeks, months in fact is our preschool's trivia night which is this Saturday. Having never been to one before I had no idea what was involved. It sounds like it'll be fun. Although being on the fundraising team and committee for the preschool takes up a fair chunk of my 'spare time' (if there is such a thing) it is very rewarding. Below is a copy of the invite I designed for the night. If you're anywhere near Murrumbateman and are free on Saturday night we still have places available so why not come along and enjoy a fun filled night.

Paying homage to the old...

... and welcoming on in the new!

This year has brought about many changes and new experiences into our lives, one which I did not expect was to have to say good bye to my long time trusty camera of 11 years.

I thought it only appropriate that the first pics taken on my new camera were of my old one.

Here they are side by side.

It might seem silly to some that I have such an emotional attachment to an inanimate object. The thing is this camera has served me well for many years and there has been no reason to upgrade other than perhaps to keep up with the ever changing technological advances.

With this camera I shot this image which I entered into my very first Australian Professional Photography Awards in 2003. My mentor at the time told me not to expect too much as it can take many years to receive an award... so you can imagine how surprised I was to received a silver with distinction for this image. Within three years and more awards I then obtained associate membership status.

The last 11 years has seen this camera and I shoot hundreds of jobs together, so we became very well acquainted.

But now it's time to get to know a new camera and so over the weekend after painting our chook pen fence (I put that in so you understand why there's white paint on my children's faces) we went for a walk and ride around the farm to collect twigs for the fireplace and I started the journey of getting to know my new camera.

The alpacas were not interested so he decided to just 'hang around'.

There's something intriguing about weathered wire and timber.

My big boy just loves the freedom of riding his bike around the farm.

And my little munchkin loves being a little monkey!

Watching hubby struggle to ride my old rickety bike which is too small for him, with it's flat tyres and added disadvantage of having a basket tide to the handle bars full of twigs, was very entertaining!

There's something about this image that I just love...

Just as much white paint ended up on my big boys face, clothes

and in his hair as did on the fence we painted.

Time to race back home and get that fire started...

but not before stopping to sit in the long grass...

to eat it ofcourse...

hmmmm.... tasty!

Then along came our little Portia...

to guide us back home...

What a lovely way to end the day.

Simple pleasures!

There is still a lot to learn about this camera but I am really looking forward to us getting to know each other much better.

Farm life... farm stay!

In the lead up to our tree change we spent numerous holidays researching possible regions that we would make our move to and the one type of holiday we did not get around to taking which we really wanted to do was a 'farm stay'.

These school holidays have been just like a farm stay... it's lambing time on the farm and we've been getting involved as much as we can in the activities surrounding this.

Like rescuing a lamb that strayed from it's weak and injured mother and helping them to bond and feed for the first time.

giving them lots of cuddles...

sitting, chatting and enjoying the company of
new friends...

while the lambs nibble on our fingers...

aren't they just...

ADORABLE!

The beauty of all this is that we get to fit in this farm stay experience between working and getting on with the usual activities of our day to day lives.

Why would we want to be any where else right now?

Interview: Canberra Times Home Feature

Creating a welcoming, comfortable creative atmosphere to reside in is an ongoing and constantly evolving project for our own personal enjoyment and that of our guests...

so having the Canberra Times Relax Magazine ask if they could feature our home was both exciting and a little nerve racking at the same time. Especially since we have only recently moved here.

What a lovely compliment, for someone to that think what you do as a part of your everyday living is interesting enough to share with others.

As I wrote here our tree change has been about making the most of simple pleasures.

I have more to share with you on that note in my next post... it's school holidays and lambing time here on the farm so we're holidaying at home and making the most of the opportunities we have right here!

It is my hope that how we're living inspires others to create the life they wish to live...

and make the most of simple pleasure!

As I have mentioned before our recent tree change to this cool climate region has brought about a new hobby 'knitting'. When working in my freezing cold workshop on my next collection of repurposed furniture (taking the old and discarded and turning them into unique statement pieces) I eventually reach a point where I cannot bare it anymore so I retreat to the warmth of my studio and with the fire roaring I pick up the needles and away I go... It's a welcoming contrast to the icy cold tasks of sanding, painting and restoring.

Where to start?

The beginning perhaps?

Maybe not that far back... so much has happened over the past week (and a bit really) and I have not stopped by here to share, sorry.

There have been a lot challenges thrown my way this last week, one being while shooting the final pics for my first Living Magazine contribution my tripod head failed with my camera, lens and flash on it and crashed to the ground... not a pretty site!!!

So I had to very quickly get hold of another camera... we're new to the region and have not established long term friendships but are so very fortunate to live on a farm with a community of very giving people. Being loaned a camera by one of my new friends I have managed to meet today's deadline... yeah!

Here is a sneak peek of the piece that will be featured in the Aug/Sept issue of Living Magazine along with step by step images and text to guide you through creating your own.

I cant wait to share more with you soon.

My creative space: juggling

It can be hard to decide which ball to let drop when you're juggling a few too many for your capacity.

Our recent tree change has thrown many more balls into my juggling act... when that happens something has got to give. This is when it's time for a reassessment of:

- what's important and what's not?

- what's working and what's not?

- are you spending your time doing what you really want to do?

In asking and answering all these questions of myself recently I decided to downgrade my big cartel store to the free 5 listing service. I was not really using it to it's full potential and I may wish to make the most of it in the future but for now I believe that money could be better spent in other areas of my business and career development.

Not long ago I also stopped a subscription to resource service that for while was fantastic for my business growth and development. It was just what I needed back then, but over the last few months I have not had time to make the most of it and in counting the dollars being spent on a service I was not really using I decided to let that one go for a while too.

These changes may seem trivial but they represent a small part of a big mental shift. This does not just apply to money matters it can also apply to our use of our time.

It can be hard to let things go even when you know deep down inside they're not really working for you... just as much as it can hard to commit to something new even though you have a feeling it could end up being a fantastic opportunity if you'd just embrace it.

That's what running a creative business is like though... peaks and valleys... opportunities that come your way without you expecting them too and others you unknowingly create yourself just by going with your gut and doing what you do!

So next time you feel that overwhelming feeling that you're juggling too many balls I recommend you take some time to sit and think about it further, write it all down let it out of your mind and onto paper.

Allow yourself to 'let go of' OR 'embrace' something.

Trust your instincts!

Now for the results of last weeks knitting:

1. This big and cozy 100% wool cowl scarf is one that I have LOVED wearing over the course of the week... it's so versatile, it can be worn like a cowl OR wrapped around twice and sit snuggly under your chin.

2. And this 70% Merino 30% Alpaca Wool Snood it one that becomes a second skin once it's on... this my friends is a MUST HAVE cold climate accessory.

I have three other knitting projects underway for the rest of the family... the chocolate brown balls of wool in the first image is in fact local (Yass) 100% Merino Wool... who knows some of it could come from the farm we live on?!

Wilga Ave Community Garden

One of the families involved in this community garden is the daughter of the farmer who owns the sheep farm that we live on... the farm donates manure and hay bales to this community garden to help keep it thriving.

This type of community project is exactly what I believe builds a stronger community spirit and encourages people to support one another while sharing the joy of working on something together that contributes to everyone's well being.

I also hope this will inspire you to consider starting your own community garden in your street, school, church... where ever!
